Interior Health’s Penticton Regional Hospital (PRH) invites applications for the role of Respiratory Therapist. PRH is looking for a knowledgeable Respiratory Therapist with strong acute care experience, who can contribute to the hospital’s High Acuity Response Team (HART) for transports and on-call availability. This means being on-call and available within 20 minutes for emergent calls. When not on transport, the Respiratory Therapist provides in-patient, acute care activities.
PRH is a 155-bed Acute Care facility in the Okanagan Health Service Area and responsible for providing core medical and surgical specialty services to surrounding population of approximately 90,000 people. As a member of the PRH multidisciplinary team, you will work independently and collaboratively providing ongoing respiratory care to clients with a variety of illnesses/diseases including, but not limited to acute and/or chronic cardio-respiratory illnesses or pathologies.
Reporting to the Physiotherapy Professional Practice Lead you will draw upon your ability to assess and prepare clients for treatment or therapy by reviewing and clarifying physician's request including client medical history; provide airway management including, but not limited to, endotracheal intubation, tracheostomy care, tube changes, tracheal bronchial hygiene, and extubation per the direction of a qualified medical practitioner, department/program policy and procedure, and established clinical guidelines; and administer therapy and treatment modalities by performing duties such as selecting, setting up and calibrating invasive and non-invasive monitoring equipment and integrating equipment to the client in preparation for procedure. As the Respiratory Therapist you will administer prescribed pharmacological agents to clients in accordance with physician’s orders by performing duties such as drawing up prescribed drugs, observing clients for side affects, assessing efficacy of treatment and documenting in client chart as part of care plan; and perform diagnostic procedures such as pulmonary function tests, arterial blood sampling, pulse oximetry and pulmonary lung mechanics measurements, and assists physician with bronchoscopy by selecting and preparing appropriate equipment for designated procedure. The position assists with related diagnostic testing such as polysomnography, home oxygen assessments, cardiac stress tests, ECGs, etc.
Casual employment means work requirements can vary between Zero and 37.5 hours per week. Casual employees receive 12.6% of their straight time pay, exclusive of all premiums, in lieu of scheduled vacations and statutory holidays. Upon completion of 180 hours, there is option of purchasing medical, dental and extended health benefit plans. Shifts when offered could fall on any day of the week and scheduled Days (07:00 to 19:15 hours) or Nights (19:15 to 07:00 hours).

Facility Details: PRH offers 24-hour Emergency and Trauma Services, Acute Services, Ambulatory and Out-patient Clinics, and Diagnostic/Paramedical Services. HART is an essential service providing high quality care to patients whose continuous medical assessment/interventions exceed the skill set of Basic Life Support paramedics in the inter facility transport environment and supports region-wide access/flow by repatriating high acuity patients to PRH. As a regional facility and secondary referral centre for the South Okanagan and Similkameen Valley, you will be joining an excellent complement of medical specialists and healthcare professionals. Excellent radiology availability with on site Computed Tomography (CT) and part time Medical Resonance Imaging (MRI). PRH has a seven-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU). PRH also serves as the referral base for hematology/transfusion medicine for the smaller local hospitals in Oliver and Princeton. In April 2019 PRH opened phase one of its new, state of the art Patient Care Tower. The Patient Care Tower includes a brand new ambulatory care centre, surgical services center, 84 medical/surgical inpatients beds in single patient rooms, a new medical device reprocessing unit and space for the UBC Faculty of Medicine Program. Phase two is now underway and will involve the renovation in the current hospital to allow the expansion of the emergency department four times its current size.

Education, Training and Experience:
• Graduation from a recognized Respiratory Therapy program.
• Current certification with the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) and eligible for registration with the British Columbia Society of Respiratory Therapists (BCSRT) and CSRT.
• Current valid BC Driver’s License.
• One to 2 years of recent acute care experience.
