We are seeking a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist Grade 3 to join our Pharmacy Team at the Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, B.C. We are looking for someone who wishes to work at the leading edge of healthcare and advance their career.
As the Clinical Pharmacy Specialist you will act as a clinical pharmacy resource by providing consultation services to internal and external health care professionals and organizations in the assigned pharmacotherapy practice area. You will develop, plan, organize and evaluate clinical programs, quality assurance activities, administrative support, teaching, and research activities, and provide and oversee the provision of pharmaceutical care of patients in the assigned pharmacotherapy practice area. The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist will support departmental and regional pharmacy initiatives through collaboration with local and regional pharmacy leaders and managers, physicians, and nursing leaders to achieve overall goals and objectives.
This is a relief full time opportunity until the incumbent returns. The assigned Pharmacotherapy practice area for this position is Critical Care. Days of work are Monday to Friday and shift times are from 8:00 to 16:00.
Typical duties and responsibilities in this position include:
• Acts as clinical pharmacy resource for internal (local and regional) and external (provincial or national) pharmacists (e.g. Clinical Pharmacy Specialists from other BC Health Authorities, relevant Specialty Networks of the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists) and other health care professionals (e.g. therapeutic consults from physicians).
• Performs competency assessments, identifies knowledge and practice skill deficiencies, and mentors pharmacists to improve relevant therapeutic knowledge of relevant pharmacotherapy and clinical practice skills to implement pharmaceutical care and solve drug-related problems.
• Acts as specialty advisor to promote appropriate use of medications for patients (including assessment, development, implementation, evaluation, and support of patient information or teaching sheets, regional drug formulary reviews, clinical practice guidelines, clinical/care pathways; pre-printed orders; parenteral drug therapy manual monographs, and departmental/regional newsletters or other related documents.
• Provides departmental, regional, and administrative support in the assessment, development, implementation, and evaluation of programs related to patients in the assigned pharmacotherapy practice area.
• Assists with ensuring quality assurance programs, clinical practice standards, workload measurement, and performance indicators applicant to programs and services in the assigned pharmacotherapy practice area are appropriately maintained and followed according to policies and procedures.
• Attends meetings and represents the pharmacy department on committees.
• Provides academic teaching in the assigned pharmacotherapy practice area to students in cooperation with the Faculty of Pharmaceutical sciences, UBC, or other School of Pharmacy.
• Provides lectures and clinical instruction for experiential and clerkship rotations, and attends designated meetings at the University related to planning of curricula and practicum rotations.
• Plans, organizes, and delivers in-service, didactic, and workshop education and training to students, pharmacy, nursing, medical, and other health care professionals in the assigned pharmacotherapy practice area (e.g. Medical Grand Rounds, Nursing Educators’ Conferences, Pharmacy Conferences, etc.).
• Designs, coordinates and actively participates in publication and research activities and provide guidance to staff and students relating to research activities. Where applicable, submits research results for internal and/or external publication in a professional journal. Utilizes proven, effective strategies to translate research findings into practice improvements.
• Provides and/or oversees the provision of pharmaceutical care to patients by performing activities such as reviewing systems; identifying actual and potential drug-related problems; specifying goals of therapy; identifying and evaluating viable therapeutic alternatives; designing a pharmacotherapeutic treatment plan; implementing a relevant monitoring plan; and evaluating response to determine if the desired outcomes have been achieved.
• Performs other related duties and/or projects as assigned.

• Current registration as a pharmacist with the College of Pharmacists of British Columbia.
• Certification of completion of an accredited Hospital Pharmacy Residency program.
• Doctorate in Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) or post graduate degree in clinical pharmacy from a recognized university program and at least 3 years recent hospital pharmacy experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, knowledge and experience.
• Active membership in the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists is recommended.
