Position Summary
Our Maintenance Department is currently seeking a permanent full-time Refrigeration | Air Conditioning (R/AC) Mechanic to join our dedicated team at the Kootenay Lake Regional Hospital in Nelson, B.C

Your Role:
This position performs skilled heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), and refrigeration mechanic work at the journeyman level in the fabrication, installation, alteration, repair and/or service of refrigeration/cooling or air handling systems including building automated control systems and their related parts and equipment throughout the facility in compliance with applicable codes and regulations.
Some Typical Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Reviews work requests and consults with user departments regarding specifications and other project requirements; interprets blueprints, drawings and specifications to determine the required materials and equipment; calculates materials and labour in estimating cost of projects and makes recommendations as required.
2. Prepares for work projects by performing operational and safety risk assessments, arranging work schedules with user departments and assembling supplies, tools and equipment.
3. Installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs heating, refrigeration/cooling and/or air handling systems by repairing and replacing components such as compressors, valves, pumps, supply and exhaust fans, chillers, heat pumps, couplings switches, steam valves, and cooling towers.
4. Repairs, installs and modifies building automated control systems by making programming changes/adjustments in accordance with established criteria and procedures, replacing components, replacing actuators, modifying pipe systems and implementing new control systems. Troubleshoots and adjusts building automated control systems which may include the use of computer software.
5. Installs, tests, maintains and repairs gas lines specific to HVAC equipment in accordance with the British Columbia Gas Safety Code.
6. Carries out the heating, cooling air handling and refrigeration systems preventative and predictive maintenance program by inspecting systems and equipment for repair and maintenance needs and for conformance to applicable codes, regulations and standards; writes operational instructions and preventative maintenance procedures as required.
7. Assigns work tasks to designated staff and provides related training and orientation; checks work performed to ensure that the work was done properly.
8. Maintains storage and work areas in clean, tidy and safe condition and maintains an inventory of supplies, equipment and tools; completes related reports and records including daily work summary sheets; recommends purchase of related supplies and equipment. Evaluates equipment/supplies for technical acceptance and safety prior to selection as required.
9. Performs other general maintenance and repair duties related to building, grounds and equipment in a variety of areas as required/assigned.
10. Performs all work in adherence to all applicable codes, regulations, and safety requirements, including regulations of the WCB.
11. Operates Interior Health vehicle to pickup, deliver and/or transport supplies, building materials, and/or equipment as required.
12. Maintains and updates trade knowledge by reviewing and staying current with applicable building codes, regulations and standards. Advises Manager or Designated alternate of regulatory changes, code revisions and safety related matters.
13. Participates in departmental meetings, training sessions and quality assurance programs as required/directed.
14. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Scheduling Information:
This position operates Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 15:00 hours and requires a valid Class 5 driver’s license, as responsibilities include providing services to multiple Interior Health facilities.

Qualifications
Education, Training and Experience:
• Certificate of Apprenticeship or Trades Qualification Certificate as a journeyman Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic or equivalent Trade.
• Class B Level Gas Fitter’s License with an electrical endorsement recognized by the Province of B.C.
• Two (2) years' recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License.
