What will you work on?
The Pacemaker Technologist provides patient care to Pacemaker Clinic patients and during Pacemaker
implantation. Performs pacemaker analysis in the O.R., including assisting the surgeon during implant
procedures and programming individual pacemaker at correct values during implant. Performs techniques
relating to Electro Cardiogram (ECG) testing, stress testing, Holter and pacemaker monitoring and other
types of diagnostic cardiac equipment. Provides interpretations, analysis and test/summary reports as
required.
• Reviews and maintains records relevant to patient history, vital signs and Pacemaker details.
• Performs pacemaker programming in the O.R. as required, including assisting the surgeon during implant procedures, and setting individual pacemaker to correct values during or post implant.
• Programs pacemakers to optimal settings and maintains records of data obtained for review by Physician.
• Performs a variety of tests such as determining capture and sensing thresholds of implanted leads, and making mathematical calculations to determine optimum safety values of pacemaker, in order to assess pacemaker function.
• Acts as a resource to physicians and other health providers relevant to pacemaker functions by providing information and troubleshooting pacemaker functions.
• Respond to queries from various internal and external sources regarding pacemaker functions and their manifestation in patients and various recordings.
• Participates in the development and review of standards, procedures and instructional material relevant to the department’s pacemaker services.
• Participates in the review, evaluation and selection of pacemakers and provides implant recommendations.
• Ensures that all equipment within the area of assigned responsibility is operating within the limits of quality control and collaborates with Biomedical Engineering and/or manufacturer as required.
• Performs the duties of a Cardiology Technologist as required, including a variety of tests such as stress testing, Holter and event monitors including analysis and electrocardiograms.
• Explains cardiac pacemaker screen system to patients, monitors cardiac pacemakers and notifies cardiologist of abnormalities; contacts patients by telephone for repeat recordings as requires. Notifies appropriate health care provider of any abnormalities according to established policies and procedures.
• Transfers and assigns ECGs in ECG Cardiology Management systems (i.e. Tracemaster) for interpretation by medical staff.
• Monitors ongoing departmental activity levels and assists fellow staff to meet requests for service.
• Maintains statistics and files completed reports.
• Maintains equipment by cleaning, lubricating and replacing items such as paper rolls, electrodes, and leads.
• Participates in Quality Management and/or Quality Assurance programs (including LEAN projects/initiatives) by providing information and input to Manager (or designate)
• Participates in the instruction/orientation of staff and/or students by assisting with departmental orientations, in-service presentations, demonstrating procedures and answering questions, as required.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Completion of a Canadian Society of Cardiology Technologists recognized diploma program in Cardiology Technology, plus successful completion of a recognized cardiac device management course, plus two years’ recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Current registration with the Canadian Society of Cardiology Technologists and eligible for membership with the Canadian Society of Cardiology Technologists (CSCT).
