Collaborative Health Coordinator - syilx Nation

Position Summary

Who are we looking for?

Interior Health is looking for a permanent full time Collaborative Health Coordinator - syilx Nation to join our team!

How will you create an impact?

Interior Health is on a journey towards reconciliation. As a collective, the Interior Health (IH) team acknowledges the traditional territories on which they work, live and play including the lands of the Dãkelh Dené, Ktunaxa, Nlaka’pamux, Secwépemc, St’at’imc, syilx and Tŝilhqot’in peoples. IH is committed to working with Aboriginal partners to plan and deliver culturally sensitive health-care services and to deliver on its goal of Improving Health and Wellness.

The Okanagan Nation Alliance (ONA) is the Tribal Council for the syilx Okanagan Nation. The ONA’s mandate is to advance, assert, support and preserve the syilx Okanagan Nation title and rights. Further, the ONA is charged with providing members with a forum to discuss and form positions on areas of common concern.

The Collaborative Health Coordinator (syilx Nation) position was designed collaboratively between IH and the syilx Nation. This position is accountable to and guided by the LoU committee, associated with the Letter of Understanding (LoU), an agreement between IH and ONA. The position reports to the Manager, Aboriginal Engagement and through shared governance of the role, to the ONA Wellness Manager. An element of this role is focused on coordinating the revitalization and implementation of the LoU engagement process and workplan between IH, ONA and the syilx communities.

The Collaborative Health Coordinator (syilx Nation) will foster collaborative partnerships with the syilx Nation and the communities, patients and families, health care providers and leaders working within IH. Details of these collaborative efforts and joint responsibilities are expressed in the LoU, which includes frameworks of syilx ways of knowing and various agreements that impact health care delivery to syilx peoples. The Collaborative Health Coordinator (syilx Nation) responds to the In Plain Sight Report Recommendations as well as the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action. As such, the Collaborative Health Coordinator (syilx Nation) is oriented to health system transformation, rather than direct service delivery to patients.

This position will be a coordinator of the LoU table and is responsible for coordinating critical conversations and collaborations for the unique holistic healthcare needs of the syilx Nation. The position engages with the syilx Wellness Committee and IH staff and leaders to listen, understand, translate and advocate with IH leadership and employees about syilx Peoples, their culture and specific needs for systems transformation change. This includes setting the stage for improving relationships between syilx communities and IH.

Some Key Duties may include:

• Supports the revitalization and implementation of the LoU engagement process and work plans wherein this position is embedded. This includes bringing various participants together and organizing meaningful engagement processes and activities.
• Creates trusting relationships and respectfully engages with the syilx Nation and Nation communities to listen, learn the context, culture and service delivery needs.
• Works with IH leaders and employees to share understandings about syilx Nation and Nation community context, cultures and service delivery needs, on priority areas identified by the LoU table.
• Facilitates collaboration between the syilx people and IH and provides recommendations to the LoU to reflect evolving situations and needs.
• Advocates for services to be culturally safe, respectful, equitable and free from racism, and advocates for avenues to improve on ways to achieve this. This includes working on deeper reflections on colonization and its impacts on syilx and other Aboriginal peoples and how services are delivered.
• Provides information about IH services through proactive and respectful communication in the method preferred by the syilx Nation and Nation communities.
• Provides timely information and advice to IH employees about emerging Nation and Nation community healthcare needs.
• Works with Nation and Nation community leaders to include IH staff participation in formal gatherings, workshops, conferences, health Improvement activities, etc. as appropriate and desired by the syilx Nation and Nation communities.
• Works with Nation and Nation community members to navigate issues-resolution mechanisms by bringing together the right decision-makers to ensure issues related to culturally safe, efficient and effective care are appropriately based on community needs.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
