Minor Test Shopper (WORKSITE LOCATION IS FLEXIBLE)

Position Summary

Interior Health (IH) is hiring Minor Test Shoppers (MTS) to join the Environmental Public Health, Tobacco and Vapour Enforcement Team in Nelson, Cranbrook and Penticton .

Salary Range:

Salary range for the position is $20 p/h.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for MTS for all major cities in IHA and encourage eligible individuals to apply. We will contact students only when we have a need to fill postings in their area.

What will you work on?

Reporting to the Team Leader, tobacco and vapour enforcement, and under the direct supervision of a Tobacco and Vapour Enforcement Officer, the Minor Test Shopper (MTS) purchases or attempts to purchase tobacco or vapour products at retail outlets. The MTS observes and notes the physical appearance of the sales clerk(s) and records the details of the transaction. The MTS appears in court as witness to provide testimony for formal prosecutions, administrative hearings or the defense of violation tickets issued by an Enforcement Officer.

Some Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Participates in any age testing and training requested by the Team Leader
2. Visits retail stores chosen by the Tobacco and Vapour Enforcement Officer to attempt to purchase tobacco and vapour products as part of the Tobacco and Vapour Products Enforcement program compliance check procedures.
3. Observes who is in the stores/ retail locations at the time of the visit, the presence or absence of decals and signage, the physical appearance of the sales clerk and any identification worn.
4. Observes the details of the conversation with the sales clerks, the tobacco, vapour or tanning products purchased where applicable and the transactions during the visit.
5. Upon leaving the store, places identifying marks on the purchases or receipts in accordance with established policy and immediately hands the purchase and change over to the Enforcement Officer as evidence of the violation.
6. Logs the time, date and records all details of the visit on the template provided by the enforcement officer.
7. Attends court upon request of the Team Leader, as a witness in formal prosecution under the Tobacco and Vapour Products Control Act and Regulation or Public Health Act for the defense of violation tickets issued as a result of a sale to the minor test shopper.
8. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience:

This employment opportunity is available only to applicants between the ages of 14 and 17 years with a minimum of Grade 8 education.

Applicants must have parental consent (form will be provided to candidates) and will require valid B.C. identification (driver’s license, B.C. ID card, or passport).

Applicant must also be willing to have their photo taken.
