Position Summary

Train to be a Medical Lab Assistant! Are you a Grade 12 student, a recent Grade 12 graduate, or a candidate of any age who self-identifies as First Nation, Aboriginal, Metis or Inuit? Interior Health is sponsoring a limited number of candidates to become qualified Medical Lab Assistants (MLA) to work in one of our busy hospitals.

What is a Medical Lab Assistant?

MLA’s perform a variety of duties such as taking blood and specimen samples from patients, preparing blood and other specimens for analysis, performing routine lab tests, distributing specimens to Laboratory departments and outside Laboratories, operating related equipment, entering data into the Lab Information System (LIS) and performing ECG testing and related clerical duties.

What is required?
Sponsored candidates will complete a BC Society of Lab Science (BCSLS) approved MLA program within 8 months of being selected for sponsorship by Interior Health. This includes a clinical practicum placement (up to 8wks) at an Interior Health hospital.

What incentives are Interior Health offering?
• An hourly wage during the practicum portion of the MLA program
• A guaranteed MLA job upon successfully completing the MLA program within the agreed timeframe
• $5,000 tuition reimbursement payment within 30 days of being hired to an eligible MLA position at Interior Health
• Support during the MLA program to connect with peers, mentoring and job readiness

Who is eligible to apply?
• Candidates who graduated Grade 12 in 2021, or will graduate in 2022
• Candidates of any age who self-identify as First Nation, Aboriginal, Metis or Inuit
• English 12 with a minimum ‘B’ Grade or equivalent
• Candidates who meet the admission criteria of a BCSLS approved MLA program, and can successfully complete the program within 8mths
• Candidates who currently reside within/around the community of Merritt

Qualifications

• Graduated Grade 12 or equivalent or will be graduating Grade 12 in 2022
• English 12 with a minimum ‘B’ Grade
o If applying before graduation current English 12 grade needs to be ‘B’
• Can demonstrate they meet the admission requirements of a BC Society of Laboratory Science Approved MLA Program and the ability to complete the educational requirements within 8 months of being accepted
• Candidates who currently reside within/around the community of Merritt
• Valid BC Driver’s License
o If applicants does not hold a valid BC Driver’s License they must demonstrate they will by the time of MLA program graduation

• Why you are interested in the MLA program?
• Why you would be a good fit?
• Which BCSLS approved MLA Program you intend to apply to?
• Confirmation that you meet all of the MLA program entry requirements? (English 12 Grade B, keyboarding at 40wpm, criminal record check, immunizations, and any other requirements)
